How It Works?

When you are faced with a large task or series of tasks, the methodology encourages you to break the work down into short, timed intervals (called “Pomodoros”) that are spaced out by short breaks. By doing this, your brain is trained to focus for very short periods, which helps you stay on top of deadlines and prevents your inbox from filling up.

Examples of some of the people it works for:

  • Motivate yourself to write.
  • Limit distractions.
  • Keep track of how long you’re spending brainstorming / writing /revising.
  • Reduce back and neck pain by walking around during Pomodoro breaks.
  • Draft a book in three weeks.

  • Kill multitasking urges in the office.
  • Get reports finished on time.
  • Bill clients by Pomodoro units (just kidding!).

  • Immerse yourself in programming, confining emailing to one or two Pomodoros a day.
  • Break large, demanding tasks into shorter steps.
  • Separate time you spend developing and refactoring.
  • Reduce amount of bad code.

  • Teach kids how to do a work Pomodoro (like cleaning up their toys), followed by a fun Pomodoro (like reading Harry Potter out loud, or drawing).
  • Spend a Pomodoro or two on focused housework.
  • Give kids with ADD breaks between Pomodoros to let out energy.

  • Give actors breaks during demanding filming schedules.
  • Pace films according to viewers’ attention spans.

  • Improve your reading speed.
  • Track assignments.
  • Write papers.
  • Break down large tasks (like drafting a research paper) into smaller steps.

  • Structure classroom time.
  • Give students a mental break between lesson plans.
  • Correct papers.

  • Measure productivity in the workplace.
  • Give teams the tools to work together.
  • Manage distractions so that employees aren’t interrupted during Pomodoros

Why does the Pomodoro Time Management Technique work?

Cirillo named it the Pomodoro Technique after a tomato-shaped timer he used in college to keep himself on track as he studied. The idea is to increase productivity by dividing your workday into highly focused chunks separated by short breaks. … Set a timer for 25 minutes and start working on the first task.

How much time is a Pomodoro?

The main premise behind the technique is to work in blocks of time, typically 25 minutes long (called pomodoro sessions), followed by a 5 minute break. Each pomodoro session should demand your full attention on one task, every break requires you to step away from your work to rest.
